Yeros Vassilis (1955)

Born in Paleopyrgos, Arcadia in 1955, he started with studying drawing and painting under Dimitris Kontos before going to the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence (1976-1979) to study painting under Fernando Farulli and printmaking under Vizzano. Returning to Greece, he worked as a teacher in secondary education from 1980 to 2015. In 1985 he obtained a Greek State scholarship. In 1992-1995 he was on sabbatical for a theoretical and artistic projects on "The use of light radiation in creating visual art", supervised by professors Chronis Botsoglou, Nikos Kessanlis and Rena Papaspyrou.
From the outset of his career he explored the dynamic of forms that unfolds autonomously in space and is determined by light and the material itself. His plain and austere compositions bespeak clear influences from geometric abstraction with certain conceptual elements. He creates compositions of linear luminous shapes using laser beams and fluorescent lamps reflected on engraved Plexiglas. The use of light plays a key role in most of his work, as evidenced also in the titles of his successive series: Photoflows (Desmos Gallery, 1990), Light Space (Desmos Gallery, 1993), Light Space 2 (111 Gallery, Thessaloniki, 1995), Light Play (Kreonidis Gallery, 1997).
In the Cosmic Energy series (Stigma Gallery, 2001), influenced by astrophysics and the energy of matter he attempts an artistic reversal of the scientific process. Each work is surrounded by mathematical formulas while the reflections on the transparent Plexigas surfaces turn the cold light of technology onto warm radiation. In Impassable Exit (To Milo Gallery, 2007) he continues his experimentations with references to the theory of the universe and the world of starts, this time with quite different media. Instead of the emphasis on transparency and the fluidity of light he employs hard steel surfaces to imprint photographs using zincography, while his subject matter shifts to the human figure and predominantly to the female body.
He has presented his work in six solo shows in Athens and Thessaloniki and has participated in group shows in Greece and Italy.
