Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete

The Museum of Contemporary Art of Crete is a modern museum of high standards, covering an area of around 1000 sq.m since 2009. After its expansion and full renovation, it supplemented the old Municipal Gallery Lefteris Kanakakis (1992) and the Rethymno Centre for Contemporary Art (1995) in Rethymno.
Today, the Museum's permanent collection contains approximately 500 artworks. Its central section consists of 50 representative works of the Rethymno born artist Lefteris Kanakakis and works of other contemporary Greek artists, donated by Maria Marangou, its current director, and her husband.
A part of the permanent collection is exhibited at the Museum's main site (5, Himaras street), while temporary exhibitions of greek and foreign artworks are hosted in other rooms or alternative locations. At the same time, it collaborates with similar institutions on various projects in Greece and abroad. So far, 104 exhibitions have been presented, both monographic and thematic, and 55 catalogues have been published since 1992. Throughout the duration of its exhibitions, tours are offered to children and adults.
As part of its educational programme, the Museum runs Art Workshops at 8, Himaras street since 1996, which are addressed to both children and adults.
