Politi Spiridoula (1957)

Born in Houni, Etoloakarnania in 1957, she studied guitar at the National Conservatoire in Athens (1976-1982) and painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1983-1987) under N. Kessanlis. She also took a philosophy course by P. Christodoulidis at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1989-1991). Her first solo exhibition was held at the Athens Art Gallery in 1987.
The techniques in her painting alternate between emphasising the plasticity of the surface and the materiality of the work or the lightness and transparency of the form. Her visual idiom is characterised by the sensitive approach to drawing and colour; there are several representational and anthropomorphic elements, but their presence is rather subtle.
She creates also three-dimensional constructions and installations using various materials such as white sheets and everyday objects, often referencing women’s handiwork or personal memories and experiences. These references have a subversive effect as they substitute the perception of reality for the poetic rendering of a dreamlike world. This dreamy aspect dominates most of her work, not just as a subject but also as an atmosphere. To this end she employs photographs and written phrases as figurative elements but also as comments on reality, promoting the ambivalent sensation of an unreal space and time.
In 2007 she co-founded the “Indoors” art group (with Marigo Kassi, Vally Nomidou and Mary Christea,) and she participates in the group’s activities.
She has presented her work in solo and group exhibitions in Greece and abroad (Cyprus, Spain, Germany, Turkey, China and the USA). She has participated also in Art Athina in 2003 and 2011. Her works can be found in private and public collections, museums and banks.
